Of course, the best way to have a ring sized is to go to a professional jeweler.  But you might prefer to have an element of surprise in your proposal.  Have you ever wondered how the lady in the film who is receiving the surprise proposal is able to get the perfect size ring from her beau?  It’s not easy to get the right sized ring for your beloved’s left hand ring finger and still maintain the element of surprise.

There are magic moments in life—graduation, turning 21, engagements, wedding anniversaries, birthdays—but they’re all more exciting when the celebration has an element of surprise.   And surprising your loved one with an engagement ring is no easy task.  But with a little planning, it can be one of the most exciting and memorable events of your lives together. 

The first task, if you intend surprising her with a diamond engagement ring, is to get her ring size without her knowing.  It might actually be a harder task than you think, because, remember, it’s not a simple case of getting an existing ring and taking it to the jeweler.  Because ring sizes vary with each finger, and it’s unusual for a girl to wear a ring on the ring finger of her left hand prior to marriage. If she does wear a ring on this finger and is in the habit of leaving one in a place which you can access without her knowing, an impression in a bar of soap, a piece of clay or even a piece of compressed bread is sufficient for a jeweler to work from to make a ring that will fit her.  You might even trace the inside of her ring on a piece of paper for the jeweler to work from. 

If she’s not in the habit of wearing a ring, you’ll have to enlist somebody’s help.  A girlfriend or her mother can be a co-conspirator.
